Dyslexia

I am a grade two teacher. I have 20 students in my class, one of them has dyslexia.

What is dyslexia:

Dyslexia is a learning problem some kids have. Dyslexia makes it tough to read and spell. The problem is inside the brain, but it doesn’t mean the person is dumb. Plenty of smart and talented people struggle with dyslexia.

Dyslexic children and adults struggle to read fluently, spell words correctly and learn a second language, among other challenges. But these difficulties have no connection to their overall intelligence. In fact, dyslexia is an unexpected difficulty in reading in an individual who has the intelligence to be a much better reader. While people with dyslexia are slow readers, they often, paradoxically, are very fast and creative thinkers with strong reasoning abilities.

Causes:

  1. A family history of dyslexia or other learning disabilities
  2. Premature birth or low birth weight
  3. Exposure during pregnancy to nicotine, drugs, alcohol or infection that may alter brain development in the fetus
  4. Individual differences in the parts of the brain that enable reading

Dyslexia can lead to a number of problems, including:

  1. Trouble learning. Because reading is a skill basic to most other school subjects, a child with dyslexia is at a disadvantage in most classes and may have trouble keeping up with peers.
  2. Social problems. Left untreated, dyslexia may lead to low self-esteem, behavior problems, anxiety, aggression, and withdrawal from friends, parents and teachers.
  3. Problems as adults. The inability to read and comprehend can prevent a child from reaching his or her potential as the child grows up. This can have long-term educational, social and economic consequences.

Children who have dyslexia are at increased risk of having attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and vice versa. ADHD can cause difficulty sustaining attention as well as hyperactivity and impulsive behavior, which can make dyslexia harder to treat.

Symptoms:

  • Before school
  • Signs that a young child may be at risk of dyslexia include:
  • Late talking
  • Learning new words slowly
  • Problems forming words correctly, such as reversing sounds in words or confusing words that sound alike
  • Problems remembering or naming letters, numbers and colors
  • Difficulty learning nursery rhymes or playing rhyming games
  • School age

Once your child is in school, dyslexia signs and symptoms may become more apparent, including:

  1. Reading well below the expected level for age
  2. Problems processing and understanding what he or she hears
  3. Difficulty finding the right word or forming answers to questions
  4. Problems remembering the sequence of things
  5. Difficulty seeing (and occasionally hearing) similarities and differences in letters and words
  6. Inability to sound out the pronunciation of an unfamiliar word
  7. Difficulty spelling
  8. Spending an unusually long time completing tasks that involve reading or writing
  9. Avoiding activities that involve reading
  10. Teens and adults

Dyslexia signs in teens and adults are similar to those in children. Some common dyslexia signs and symptoms in teens and adults include:

  1. Difficulty reading, including reading aloud
  2. Slow and labor-intensive reading and writing
  3. Problems spelling
  4. Avoiding activities that involve reading
  5. Mispronouncing names or words, or problems retrieving words
  6. Trouble understanding jokes or expressions that have a meaning not easily understood from the specific words (idioms), such as “piece of cake” meaning “easy”
  7. Spending an unusually long time completing tasks that involve reading or writing
  8. Difficulty summarizing a story
  9. Trouble learning a foreign language
  10. Difficulty memorizing
  11. Difficulty doing math problems

Statistics in Lebanon:

NIH research has shown that dyslexia affects 20%, or 1 in every 5 people. Dyslexia is one of the most common cause of reading difficulties in elementary school children because only 1 in 10 dyslexics.

Causes and Effects of Air Pollution

Causes:

  1. Burning of Fossil Fuels: Sulfur dioxide emitted from the combustion of fossil fuels like coal, petroleum and other factory combustibles is one the major cause of air pollution. Pollution emitting from vehicles including trucks, jeeps, cars, trains, airplanes cause immense amount of pollution. We rely on them to fulfill our daily basic needs of transportation. But, there overuse is killing our environment as dangerous gases are polluting the environment. Carbon Monooxide caused by improper or incomplete combustion and generally emitted from vehicles is another major pollutant along with Nitrogen Oxides, that is produced from both natural and man made processes.
  2. Mining operations: Mining is a process wherein minerals below the earth are extracted using large equipments. During the process dust and chemicals are released in the air causing massive air pollution. This is one of the reason which is responsible for the deteriorating health conditions of workers and nearby residents.
  •  Indoor air pollution: Household cleaning products, painting supplies emit toxic chemicals in the air and cause air pollution. Have you ever noticed that once you paint walls of your house, it creates some sort of smell which makes it literally impossible for you to breathe.

Effects of Air pollution

1. Respiratory and heart problems: The effects of Air pollution are alarming. They are known to create several respiratory and heart conditions along with Cancer, among other threats to the body. Several millions are known to have died due to direct or indirect effects of Air pollution. Children in areas exposed to air pollutants are said to commonly suffer from pneumonia and asthma.

2. Global warming: Another direct effect is the immediate alterations that the world is witnessing due to Global warming. With increased temperatures world wide, increase in sea levels and melting of ice from colder regions and icebergs, displacement and loss of habitat have already signaled an impending disaster if actions for preservation and normalization aren’t undertaken soon.

Acid Rain: Harmful gases like nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides are released into the atmosphere during the burning of fossil fuels. When it rains, the water droplets combines with these air pollutants, becomes acidic and then falls on the ground in the form of acid rain. Acid rain can cause great damage to human, animals and crops.

What is Air Pollution

Pollution is now a common place term, that our ears are attuned to. We hear about the various forms of pollution and read about it through the mass media. Air pollution is one such form that refers to the contamination of the air, irrespective of indoors or outside. A physical, biological or chemical alteration to the air in the atmosphere can be termed as pollution. It occurs when any harmful gases, dust, smoke enters into the atmosphere and makes it difficult for plants, animals and humans to survive as the air becomes dirty. Air pollution can further be classified into two sections- Visible air pollution and invisible air pollution. Another way of looking at Air pollution could be any substance that holds the potential to hinder the atmosphere or the well being of the living beings surviving in it. The sustainment of all things living is due to a combination of gases that collectively form the atmosphere; the imbalance caused by the increase or decrease of the percentage of these gases can be harmful for survival .

Google Forms

Skills Learned

This is the most effective thing for teachers because it helps them to create a quiz and chose the theme that she wants also we as teaches can chose what type of questions to use (multiple choice, long answer, short answer, check box…) so it really facilitate the teachers life.

How to use as Teachers

As teachers, we can use it as a daily bases since it saves time and it’s a very helpful way to test the students knowledge. When the quiz is sent to all students , after they answer the teacher will only look for the grade because the quiz wil be automatically corrected. When you put the questions at the same time you can put the answer key and grade it.

Reflection

Google forms is important. Saves time. Let the students know their grade at the same moment. The teacher can add comments. If the grade is good, she can ad excellent or any thing that motivate students. And if the grade isn’t good, she can add wrong answer, bad luck..
